10. God destroyed the
ten spies that brought up false report and stirred up the people of God against
Moses.
“36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who
returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a
slander upon the land,
37 even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the
land, died by the plague before the Lord.” Numbers 14:36-37
11. The Company of
Korah were swallowed up by the earth by God’s judgement and fire consumed the
other 250 men that offered incense.
“29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they
be visited after the visitation of all men; then the Lord hath not sent me.
30 But if the Lord make a new thing, and the earth open her
mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down
quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the
Lord.
31 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking
all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:
32 and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up,
and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their
goods.
33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive
into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the
congregation.
34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry
of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. 35 And there came
out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that
offered incense.” Numbers 16:29-35
12. God sent fiery
serpents to bite and kill His own people.
“4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red
sea, to compass the land of
Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged
because of the way.
5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses,
Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for
there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light
bread.
6 And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and
they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.” Numbers 21:4-6
There are so many cases of God attacking people both His
children and others in The Bible. Let’s take a look at the New Testament as
some people may think it is a different ball game since grace has come to us.
1. God attacked
Ananias and Sapphira for lying.
“1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife,
sold a possession,
2 and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy
to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart
to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained,
was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why
hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but
unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the
ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him
out, and buried him. 7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when
his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the
land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. 9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye
have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them
which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
10 Then fell she down straightway at his
feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead,
and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.” Acts 5:1-10
2. King Herod was
struck down dead by God’s angel and eaten up by worms immediately.
“21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat
upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.
22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a
god, and not of a man. 23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him,
because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the
ghost.” Acts 12:21-23
3. Apostle Paul
commanded blindness upon the wizard by the move of the Holy Spirit.
“8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by
interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his
eyes on him,
10 and said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou
child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to
pervert the right ways of the Lord?
11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and
thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there
fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him
by the hand.
12 Then the deputy,
when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the
Lord.” Acts 13:8-12
You will do well to go and study the book of Revelations and
see the terrible judgement of God upon those who refuse to accept Him as their
Saviour.
I took my time to go through all these to give you an
understanding that spiritual attacks can also come from God and not just from
the devil alone.
Why does God attack
people?
I want you to know another strong truth here. God can attack
and do attacks both His children and those who are not for several reasons. For
this the writer of Hebrews warns us,
“30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto
me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his
people.
31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the
living God.” Hebrews 10:30-31
1. To bring such to
repentance.
“33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon
Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his
body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles’
feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws. 34 And at the end of the days I
Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned
unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that
liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is
from generation to generation:
35 and all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as
nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among
the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What
doest thou?
36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the
glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my
counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom,
and excellent majesty was added unto me.
37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King
of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that
walk in pride he is able to abase.” Daniel 4:33-37
2. To bring judgement
upon such.
“1 And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the
Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.
2 And they said, Hath the Lord indeed spoken only by Moses?
hath he not spoken also by us? And the Lord heard it.
3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which
were upon the face of the earth.) 4 And the Lord spake suddenly unto Moses, and
unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the
congregation. And they three came out.
5 And the Lord came down in the pillar of the cloud, and
stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both
came forth.
6 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet
among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will
speak unto him in a dream.
7 My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine
house. 8 With him will I speak mouth to
mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the
Lord shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my
servant Moses?
9 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them; and he
departed.
10 And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and,
behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam,
and, behold, she was leprous.” Numbers
12:1-10
3.To show His power
and supremacy over all.
“ For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and
will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and
against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.”
Exodus 12:12
4. To punish people
for their rebellion.
“27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which
murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of
the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye
have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29 your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that
were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and
upward, which have murmured against me, 30 doubtless ye shall not come into the
land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of
Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey,
them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised. 32
But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your
children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms,
until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.” Numbers 14:27-33
